Morgan Freeman's Doppelgänger

He takes the same bus home that I do every night. And he makes my day every night.

So that's a picture of Morgan Freeman, not his look-alike. As much as I love taking pictures, I don't whip out my camera in public and take random pictures of people without them knowing like a creeper or a paparazzo...usually.

Anyway, every night on the bus, Morgan Freeman's doppelganger (we'll call him Morgan) is the happy and calm figure in the front of the bus who talks up the four year old next to him about how his day at preschool went and finds the open seats for young mothers and their children. Thanks for making me happier each evening with your example Morgan. I need to be more like you!

Midnight in Paris

Much needed movie night last night with the fabulous Ginna where I basically fell in love with this movie and you should too! Because...

  • The cinematography is breathtaking!
  • The casting is great and...
  • The subsequent acting is fabulous
  • The music is INCREDIBLE (Cole Porter is my new favorite!)
  • Owen Wilson is in it
  • Woody Allen wrote it
  • Woody Allen directed it
  • It was nominated for 4 Golden Globes and won Best Screenplay
  • It has won awards from TONS of film critics associations
  • It is AFI's 2011 Movie of the Year
  • The ending ROCKS!
Believe me yet? So...

1. Read:

Ernest Hemingway: All men fear death. It's a natural fear that consumes us all. We fear death because we feel that we haven't loved well enough or loved at all, which ultimately are one and the same. However, when you make love with a truly great woman, one that deserves the utmost respect in this world and one that makes you feel truly powerful, that fear of death completely disappears. You two are the only ones in the entire universe. You conquer what most lesser men have never conquered before, you have conquered a great woman's heart, the most vulnerable thing she can offer to another. Death no longer lingers in the mind. Fear no longer clouds your heart. Only passion for living, and for loving, become your sole reality. This is no easy task for it takes insurmountable courage. But remember this, for that moment when you are making love with a woman of true greatness you will feel immortal.

(I know! Right?!)

2. Rent

3. Yes, you're welcome for a great evening!

Oh, P.S. Ginna and I wanted to fly to Paris after the first 15 seconds so...fair warning. You might too.

A Day in VA!

I was very excited to FINALLY get a call from the language service: they needed a Romanian interpreter for a court case in Stafford!! So I did everything I was supposed to: studied up with my dictionary and some of my favorite people in Romania, tried to learn the legal jargon, and even called the court the day before to be sure my case was still on the docket. After all that and an hour drive...Doamna Romanca didn't come. Oh well, it was probably better to have an opportunity to sit and listen to actual cases without the pressure of interpreting. I got the words I should have studied and feel a lot more confident about translating the next time they need me.

Plus, bonus! I got to spend the day with Annie: ate a delicious strawberry chicken salad and then she took me to the Marine Corps Museum, which was a lot more awesome than I was expecting. I have seen it several times driving south from Maryland, always pointing up in Quantico at a 45 degree angle. It was fun to see inside. It also happened to be snowing (yeah, two days after April-esque weather) so we decided it was the perfect cold day activity.

Spending time learning more about a branch of my military and some of their incredible sacrifices for my freedom=time well spent.

Bet ya didn't know the architecture symbolizes the flag raised over Iwo Jima

Voyage of Life

Last year, upon randomly walking into the National Gallery of Art, I discovered my favorite series of paintings. This year, while reminiscing, I decided to go back and find them again. The nice lady at the information desk put up very well with my "you know, uh, paintings of a man's life, allegory, river, symbolism, uh..." and directed me to Thomas Cole's Voyage of Life. It is a series of four paintings done by an American in the 1800's, depicting four stages of life.

You know how some people say art "speaks" to them? Well, art and I have communication problems. Art definitely gives me the cold shoulder the majority of the time. Not even a whisper! But this series? It won't shut up! I LOVE it! One of the best parts is, the explanations were written by Cole. So, in addition to studying them for yourself, you can read what the artist was thinking as he created the piece. Enjoy! (forgive my amateur shots of the originals, but they post better here than copies from the internet)

Childhood

A stream is seen issuing from a deep cavern, in the side of a craggy and precipitous mountain, whose summit is hidden in clouds. From out the cave glides a boat, whose golden prow and sides are sculptured into figures of the Hours: steered by an Angelic Form, and laden with buds and flowers, it bears a laughing Infant, the Voyager whose varied course the artist has attempted to delineate. On either hand the banks of the stream are clothed in luxuriant herbage and flowers. The rising sun bathes the mountains and flowery banks in rosy light.

The dark cavern is emblematic of our earthly origin, and the mysterious Past. The Boat, composed of Figures of the Hours, images the thought that we are borne on the hours down the Stream of Life. The Boat identifies the subject in each picture. The rosy light of the morning, the luxuriant flowers and plants, are emblems of the joyousness of early life. The close banks and the limited scope of the scene indicate the narrow experience of Childhood, and the nature of its pleasures and desires. The Egyptian Lotus in the foreground of the picture is symbolical of Human Life. Joyousness and wonder are the characteristic emotions of childhood.

Youth

The stream now pursues its course through a landscape of wider scope and more diversified beauty. Trees of rich growth overshadow its banks, and verdant hills form the base of lofty mountains. The Infant of the former scene is become a Youth on the verge of Manhood. He is now alone in the Boat, and takes the helm himself: and in [an] attitude of confidence and eager expectation, gazes on a cloudy pile of Architecture, an air-built Castle, that rises dome above dome in the far-off blue sky. The Guardian Spirit stands upon the bank of the stream, and with serious yet benignant countenance seems to be bidding the impetuous voyager "God speed." The beautiful stream flows directly toward the aerial palace, for a distance; but at length makes a sudden turn, and is seen in glimpses beneath the trees, until it at last descends with the rapid current into a rocky ravine, where the voyager will be found in the next picture. Over the remote hills, which seem to intercept the stream, and turn it from its hitherto direct course, a path is dimly seen, tending directly toward that cloudy Fabric, which is the object and desire of the voyager.

The scenery of this picture-its clear stream, its lofty trees, its towering mountains, its unbounded distance, and transparent atmosphere-figure[s] forth the romantic beauty of youthful imaginings, when the mind magnifies the Mean and Common into the Magnificent, before experience teaches what is the real. The gorgeous cloud-built palace, whose most glorious domes seem yet but half revealed to the eye, growing more and more lofty as we gaze, is emblematic of the day-dreams of youth, its aspirations after glory and fame; and the dimly seen path would intimate that Youth, in his impetuous career, is forgetful that he is embarked on the Stream of Life, and that its current sweeps along with resistless force, and increases in swiftness as it descends toward the great Ocean of Eternity.

Manhood

Storm and cloud enshroud a rugged and dreary landscape. Bare impending precipices rise in the lurid light. The swollen stream rushes furiously down a dark ravine, whirling and foaming in its wild career, and speeding toward the Ocean, which is dimly seen through the mist and falling rain. The boat is there, plunging amid the turbulent waters. The voyager is now a man of middle age: the helm of the boat is gone, and he looks imploringly toward heaven, as if heaven's aid alone could save him from the perils that surround him. The Guardian Spirit calmly sits in the clouds, watching with an air of solicitude the affrighted voyager. Demon forms are hovering in the air.

Trouble is characteristic of the period of Manhood. In Childhood there is no cankering care; in Youth no despairing thought. It is only when experience has taught us the realities of the world, that we lift from our eyes the golden veil of early life: that we feel deep and abiding sorrow; and in the picture, the gloomy, eclipse-like tone, the conflicting elements, the trees riven by tempest, are the allegory; and the Ocean, dimly seen, figures the end of life, to which the voyager is now approaching. The demon forms are Suicide, Intemperance, and Murder, which are the temptations that beset men in their direst trouble. The upward and imploring look of the voyager shows his dependence on a Superior Power and that faith saves him from the destruction that seems inevitable.

Old Age

Portentous clouds are brooding over a vast and midnight Ocean. A few barren rocks are seen through the gloom-the last shores of the world. These form the mouth of the river, and the boat, shattered by storms, its figures of the hours broken and drooping, is seen gliding over the deep waters. Directed by the Guardian Spirit, who thus far has accompanied him unseen, the voyager, now an old man, looks upward to an opening in the clouds, from whence a glorious light bursts forth, and angels are seen descending the cloudy steps, as if to welcome him to the Haven of Immortal Life.

The stream of life has now reached the Ocean, to which all life is tending. The world, to Old Age, is destitute of interest. There is no longer any green thing upon it. The broken and drooping figures of the boat show that Time is nearly ended. The chains of corporeal existence are falling away; and already the mind has glimpses of Immortal Life. The angelic Being, of whose presence until now the voyager has been unconscious, is revealed to him, and with a countenance beaming with joy, shows to his wondering gaze scenes such as mortal man has never yet seen.

Oh Yeah, THAT'S Why I Live Here!

This past weekend was awesome!

Friday Night: ice skating at the National Gallery of Art with, you know, 30 friends in the most beautiful (it's mid-April right?) weather ever!

Saturday: ridiculously good weather continues to the point that I question my sanity wearing a jacket the first week in January. Lunch at fabulous burger place, going back, but not soon enough.

Trip to the Hirshhorn to see Andy Warhol's exhibit. And...the museum guard totally let us in on the secret for the dark room/red light exhibit!

Stopped by the National Gallery of Art (inside this time) to find my favorite works of art (more on them later!). Saw a little da Vinci and lots more.

Finally, had a great time on the National Harbor at Gaylord National's Ice Exhibit, an interactive indoor wonderland created entirely of ice! It takes dozens of Chinese artisans almost a month to create each winter and is housed in a large tent kept at 9 degrees Fahrenheit! We got to wear giant blue parkas and go down an ice slide.

Basically, fabulous.

Also contemplated how I would feel about my future children playing on half a giant man protruding out of sand.

Funny, I think I'd rather a slide and swings. Crazy, I know. Bring on some more good times DC, bring 'em on!

Lessons Learned in 2011

"I'm just happy it's over." Literally heard those words come out of someone's mouth re 2011 and it seems to be the general sentiment in regards to last year. Amen! I totally understand. Twenty-eleven was a rough and tough one for a lot of us in a lot of ways. But...if we really want 2012 to be better like y'all are posting on Facebook, we should look back and genuinely try to learn from last year before slamming the door and yelling "good riddance!" -yeah, I was tempted... (don't worry, the happy parts of 2011 post is coming in a couple hours). So, in the hope that someone will be inspired by my attempt, here is some of what I learned (Before you think me stupid or incredibly shallow, consider that I probably actually knew these things before. This year simply provided me with uniquely personally-tailored experiences to learn them better - experiences which will remain anonymous, for the most part, unless you ask. Then I'm happy to share. I love to talk!):

  • Just 'cause it seems like a good thing doesn't mean it is (or that it's the right thing for you to be doing).

  • Despite drowning in an assortment of good and even GREAT advice from people who really care about you and opinions from those that really just want you to make the decision the way they think is right, the making of the decision is eventually all up to you (with God's help). No one can make it for you (pretty dang happy about learning that one a lot better this year!).

  • Everyone has talents! Maybe you should take time out of centering your life around yourself and figure out what Mr. Iseethatguyaroundbutdon'tknowhimtoowell's are. Maybe it will be a good experience. Maybe you'll learn something new and make another friend.

  • That thing you can see would be a nice, good, considerate thing for someone to do given the situation and the circumstances but no one seems to be doing it?!! It's cause you're supposed to do it.

  • People can still care about each other and have a decent relationship despite having BIG differences.

  • It takes a really long time to mow the lawn around our house and roommates can have really great ideas about how to make it less of a nightmare-like working together and halfsies-ing it, brilliant!

  • It's possible to be nice and not let people walk all over you simultaneously.

  • You really can learn something from everyone!

  • Cooking is really fun.

  • Your financial status does not define you.

  • Your employment status and career field do not define you.

  • The way you carry yourself through difficult times and the way you treat others does define you.

  • Little brothers can say very profound things.

  • You can spearhead a project, and you can achieve your goals.

  • Family (and time spent with them) is so ridiculously precious (pictures added on this last one because this really is the crux of it all folks, for serious).

Hmm...

Not quite

That's it!

Let's make 2012 better because we learn from 2011!
